An Orion product installer may launch and then terminate quietly in any of the following situations:
- A policy restriction is in place.
- A certificate mismatch is encountered
- A SolarWinds certificate is designated as untrusted.
- Your Orion server (Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP) does not have sufficient resources to verify the Orion installer certificate.
- Multiple Job Engines are listed as installed under Add and Remove Programs (Orion 10.0 and Below)
Typically, these conditions are indicated by the presence of the following or similar lines in the OrionInstaller.log:
FATAL OrionInstaller.Program - Exception: This installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact your system administrator.
Microsoft.Deployment.WindowsInstaller.InstallerException: This installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact your system administrator.
OrionInstaller.log is created by running Orion Diagnostics. To run Orion Diagnostics, click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Documentation and Support > Orion Diagnostics, click Start, and then save the SolarwindsDiagnostics.zip archive to an appropriate location. OrionInstaller.log is located in the LogFiles folder of the extracted SolarwindsDiagnostics.zip archive.
To address this issue:
- Confirm that account used to install your Orion product has sufficient privileges on your designated Orion server.
Note: Generally, SolarWinds recommends that the account used to install any Orion product has full administrative privileges on the designated orion server.
- If you are using Internet Explorer, confirm that SolarWinds is a trusted publisher, as directed in the following steps:
- Open an Internet Explorer window.
- Click Tools > Manage Add-ons.
- Click Toolbars and Extensions.
- If the SWToolset add-on is disabled, click SWToolset, and then click Enable or Allow.
- Click Close.
- If your designated Orion server is using either Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, confirm that your Orion server has sufficient resources to verify the Orion installer certificate. For more information, see the Microsoft Support Knowledge base article, "FIX: Error message when you try to install a large Windows Installer package or a large Windows Installer patch package in Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP: 'Error 1718. File was rejected by digital signature policy'".
Note: SolarWinds does not support production installations of Orion products on Windows XP. Only limited installations of evaluation versions of Orion products are supported.
Identify if Multiple Job Engines are Installed
- Go into Add and Remove Programs
- Under Solarwinds you see Job Engine 1.5 (Orion 10.0 and up) as well as Job Engine 1.1 - 1.4.2 still Installed
- Select Solarwinds Job Engine 1.4.2 and below and attempt to Remove the Application
- If application fails, continue to Step 4
- Download the MSIcuu2.exe Application in this KB Article.
- Note: This is a Microsoft Application
- Install the MSIcuu2.exe Application
- Go into Start> Programs> Windows Install Clean Up
- Select Solarwinds Job Engine 1.4.2 and below and select Remove.
- This will only remove the Registry Entry for the Installer and not the actual application.
- Rerun the Orion 10.1 Installer.
